Hardware and software RAID
RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) means the cooperation of two or more hard drives. Such a solution provides additional capabilities which are not available when a single disk is used. Volume replication is responsible for the synchronizing of whole logical units via a network. It is block-based and is very similar to RAID 1 (the only difference is if a network connection is broken, only the changed data will be "rebuilt" at the destination - it means the destination will be rebuilt as a copy of the source volume). Volume replication (in this case: synchronous volume replication) may be a good solution for NAS logical volumes. There are two benefits of it: data redundancy and maximum safety. The main drawbacks are high costs and transfer speed while the WAN is being used. It means that synchronous volume replication will be a better choice for LAN networks.
Data (File) Replication is associated with files and also uses a network connection. Open-E DSS V6 (which is built on snapshot replication) comes in handy in cases where data is not frequently modified. Such modifications can be significant because any changes between snapshots are not monitored. Data (File) Replication (in this case: asynchronous Data (File) Replication) may prove to be the answer for problems with a slow WAN connection during synchronous volume replication.
DSS V6 also supports local backup for Dynamic Units like local HDDs, USB drives (USB Storage Support) or tape drives - that are designed especially for storing backup data. Shortly, such a solution allows businesses to keep data safe physically - by storing it in different locations on a removable unit. Moreover, it also provides the possibility of real-time backups. When there is a need to backup an NAS server, there is no obligation to shut it down if DSS V6 is being used.
